Chiggens Short bow (Vampiric Shortbow +15dmg -5enrg +30hp) x-tra attack speed and vamp damge make this one good for when i need a lil more oomph. Am trying to get a shortbow with a decent skin I can replace this one with, but have pretty much the same stats- Chiggens bow has saved my butt many times.
Stygian bow (Sundering Recurve 15%dmg^50hp +30hp) was using bladed recurve with same stats b4 this weekend, since main focus is interupting, this is my #1 used bow
Zelnuhuns Bow (Sundering Longbow 15%dmg -10def while attacking +30hp) is my least used, mostly just like the skin, and could use a different bow in this slot... if it gets used at all it's for opening shots at extreme long range before switching to recurve.
Stormbow (Zealous mod Longbow, +5 enrg, +30 HP) I use this one when I run out of gas. The zealous string and +5enrg could be on any bow, but of course just love the stormbow skin.

I really only need one of the two Longbows, like i said Zelnuhuns hardly gets used at this point....I could put a poison string on something maybe, but I tend to re-apply poison before it ever naturally times out.

Favorite name: Firey Feathered Flatbow of Fortitude. (alliteration ftw)

Ironwing longbow
Forgotten flatbow (zealous+barrage is cool) also use for pulling
Icy Mursaat Longbow of fortitude (died blue, floating ice anyone?)
vamp short of fortitude
Cripling azure recurve of fortitude (cripshot, pvp, interrupt)
Firey Azure short of fortitude
Shocking celestial longbow of fortitude
clean shortbow +5 energy, not sure what to use it for yet
Elswyth's recurve (basically pointless and outdone by the ironwing and crip. azure recurve, nice skin tho)
Sundering hornbow of marksmanship (can't say I use it much...)
Shocking maplewood longbow of fort (on a hero, I like the skin but no other use for it)
Icy ascalon longbow of fortitude (also on a hero, oldest bow I have.)
and of course, a candy cane bow
14 bows in all I guess. my ranger is spoilt. But he's my First, Main, and only Spoilt character.

Just finished Turai's Story last nite.....so got a Undead Shortbow to replace Chiggens with after all this time, modded it out with exact same stats- way nicer skin at least IMO.

@RAC, I think we were talking about just bows that we have slotted and use regularly (that why everybody else has 4 listed max), but whatever...nice collection

Flatbows work better in some cases due to line of sight, but they have the same range... comes out as a wash.

I have a set of recurves:
Crippling, Barbed, Poisonous, Silencing, and the essential Elswyth's Recurve (Vamp).
And ofc I have a Stormbow which I have just because it looks cool :P (it's sundering, I know that sucks, but I just show it off and pull :P )

So in PvE (HM) if I'm running an epidemic BHA build with Apply poison... Which would be the better primary bow?

Silencing Recurve of Fortitude
Poisoning Recurve of Fortitude

The silencing. While [[email protected]] lasts its recharge even at 10 spec, bosses often have reduced condition length on them- silencing will help your BHA shutdown a boss for longer.

Getting poison to stick, however, isn't as imporant.

No point having a recurve on BHA, the arc is fixed high, may as well have a flatbow as you are going to suffer the penalties anyhow, so get the benefits too.

You only usually get a BHA fired every 15 seconds anyway.

Elswyth's Recurve Bow - Interupting and general PvE usage bow (also love the simple black design).

Urgoz's Longbow - Usually to pull and splinter barrage with (my favourite bow skin in the game!)

Deldrimore Recurve Bow (green) - Usually only used in PvP when running a cripshot build (cool skin but not that amazing)

Koren's Hornbow - For spike builds but i hardly run spike builds anymore (awesome skin, probably my 2nd favourite)

Poisonous Stormbow of Fortitude - Condition build bow, helps keep targets poisoned for longer (cool animated skin makes this bow instant must have).

Shocking Mursaat Recurve Bow of Marksmanship (19%) - Hey, I didn't have a better grip to use!

Zelnuhuns Bow - Well, it's what I've got for a standard bow so far.

I haven't started tweaking and messing with it. I think I want to get myself a Zealous or Silencing string sometime, and a Perfect Grip of Fortitude . . . then I'll take a nice simple Wooden Longbow. Not sure of the inscription yet.

Eslwyth Recurve Bow- the bow I use most of the time
Deldimor Recurve Bow- for Crip Shot build
Kaolin's Longbow- when using BHA

Imho Poisonous is just a waste, with AP you dont need to lengthen poison...

To answer your question: It has to do with the way bow attack animations interact with barrage's recharge time. The flatbow is fast enough that you finish your attack animation for barrage and start the animation for your next auto-attack a tiny bit before barrage recharges. (You should have already grabbed the next arrow and started to bring it around the notch it on the bow.) If you then hit barrage on the recharge, your attack animation is going to start all over again (you're going to reach back to your quiver and grab another arrow), and -- now here's the problem -- the game is going to add a few frames to smooth out the transition from partway through the attack animation back to the start of the attack animation. The net result is that you end up a tiny bit slower than if you have used a bow that syncs up better with the recharge.

I tend to find that a longbow/recurve bow with 13-14% IAS is best for smoothly going from one barrage straight into the nest. (Drunken Master works well for achieving this.) I think the actual cutoff is around 18% IAS for a longbow/recurve bow (been awhile since I worked out the figures, so I could be misrembering), but you need to factor in a little human reaction time for hitting barrage.

Barrage's refire time sits right in the middle of a short/flat bow (2.0 sec) and a recurve/long bow (2.4 sec). I'm not sure what the exact number is, but it's somewhere around 2.2 seconds. So Chthon is correct when he says that a recurve/long bow with a tiny IAS like Drunken Master is technically the best way to maximize your number of Barrages you can fire in a set amount of time (assuming flawless reaction time). Taking reaction time into account, just a regular recurve/long bow sans the IAS is the way to go.

As for my PvE bow sets (I don't PvP with my Ranger), it depends entirely and solely on whether or not I'm using Read the Wind.

Without Read the Wind in the build:
- Vamp recurve bow of fortitude 15^50
- Poisonous recurve bow of fortitude 15^50
- Silencing recurve bow of fortitude 15^50
- Vamp longbow of fortitude 15^50 (for pulling)

With Read the Wind in the build:
- Vamp flatbow of fortitude 15^50
- Poisonous flatbow of fortitude 15^50
- Silencing flatbow of fortitude 15^50
- Vamp recurve bow of fortitude 15^50 (in case RtW gets interrupted)

I usually carry:

Zealous short: for energy recharge
Elswyth's Recurve: standard "in battle" bow
Sundering Flatbow

Last slot may be an elemental to trigger an effect (fire/cold)
